What is "Positive" in Positive Psychology?

Positive: What we want in ourselves and in life & world around us. We all want to feel happy, surrounded by people who care for and make world a better place for us. In short live a meaningful life.

Positive Psychology

Happiness is a slippery concept. Sometimes it seems to us like the Holy Grail: mythical, wonderful, but probably unobtainable.

Positive Psychology suggests that happiness is more than obtainable. It is the natural result of building up our well-being and satisfaction with life. Professor Martin Seligman spent many years developing a theory of happiness. He wanted to identify the building blocks of well-being.

So positive psychology is based on these three major elements

  • Uses scientific steps to study these topic
  • Identifies what makes us happy
  • Concrete steps how to flourish

  • What is Well-Being in Positive Psychology?

Happiness is a slippery concept. Sometimes it seems to us like the Holy Grail: mythical, wonderful, but probably unobtainable. Positive Psychology believes that well being should be a balanced science which could be:

  • Definable
  • Measurable
  • Tested Happiness
  • Flourishing
  • Hence Positive Psychology suggests that happiness is more than obtainable. It is the natural result of building up our well-being and satisfaction with life.

    Broadest meaning of Positive Psychology

To lead a meaningful life we need a balance of

  • Aiming for things we want and moving away from the things we do not want
  • Choose the things we don’t want to get the things we want deeply
  • These are complex choices to make and Positive Psychology gives us tools to make these choices better in an effective manner.

    Well-Being Theory - PERMA Model

Professor Martin Seligman spent many years developing a theory of happiness. He wanted to identify the building blocks of well-being. He drew up a five-sided model of well-being called the PERMA model.

These are the five elements Seligman found essential to human well-being: Each of these elements is essential to our well-being and satisfaction with life. Together, they form the solid foundation upon which we can build a happy and flourishing life.
